Matthew is an experienced dispute resolution solicitor known for giving frank and straight-forward advice on resolving difficult and complex disputes. Matthew identifies the real issues quickly and formulates an effective plan of action to achieve the best outcome for his clients.

Clients have described him as an “experienced and forceful litigator“ that “strikes hard where is matters“ but “possessing that essential dry humour that matters when dealing with stressed clients.“

His practice is focussed on real estate property disputes, including boundary disputes, rights of way and other easements, restrictive covenants, right to light and landlord and tenant disputes.

Recognised as one of the leading experts on disputes arising from the Party Wall etc Act 1996, Matthew handles applications for injunctions, statutory appeals, and pursuing or defending claims for damage and compensation. He also accepts appointments as a third surveyor under the Party Wall etc Act 1996.

Matthew is also known for his specialist expertise in construction related private nuisance claims, including claims arising from noise and vibration, dust, and interference with easements of support and other rights.

Extensive experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution is another element of his practice including appointments as an arbitrator, most recently in relation to price-fixing at a national airport. He is an Accredited Mediator and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Dedicated to education and training, Matthew is regularly invited to speak to professional audiences, and is the author of several of leading textbooks, including The Law of Construction Nuisance, The Law and Practice of Basement Extensions, (with Nicholas Isaac KC) and The New Party Wall Casebook. Matthew is also one of the authors of the 2025 edition of the Party Wall Professional Standard on behalf of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Matthew is qualified as a Solicitor-Advocate (Civil) and has appeared in in the First-Tier Tribunal, the County Court, the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Outside of work Matthew is passionate about grass roots rugby union and can still occasionally be found playing loose-head prop for Old Emanuel RFC. Matthew is also a qualified RFU referee and is a panel member of the RFU’s independent disciplinary judiciary.
